EBB 101 – Introduction to Educational Science
This introductory course intends to familiarize the students with the concepts, issues and developments involved in the field of education through a survey of foundations of education. By the end of the course, the students are expected to develop a comprehensive perspective for discussing the basic issues related to the Turkish education system.
ELT 101 – Contextual Grammar
This course aims to promote understanding the relationship between language structures and lexical items, the attribution of meaning by means of these structures, analysis of language structures within the framework of a context so as to establish relations between form and text type, production of advanced level texts synthesizing these structures. ELT 103 – Listening and Speaking Skills I
Analysing authentic listening materials and speech samples used in different discourses; basic listening and phonetic skills such as discriminating minimal pairs and formulating phonetic transcriptions of problematic sounds; higher level listening skills and strategies; the fundamentals of listening and phonetics namely vowels, consonants, stress in words, rhythm and intonation as well as the usage of phonetic alphabet for learning and production.
ELT 105 – Reading and Writing Skills I
This course presents a wide range of authentic reading materials including newspapers, journals, reviews and academic texts in order to comprehend contrasting viewpoints and to predict and identify main ideas and to decode inter-sentential clues. It also aims to equip students with intensive and extensive reading habits. Critical thinking skills such as synthesizing information or analysing a problem as well as reacting on the basis of evaluation are fostered. Students also analyse and produce different types of writings; build up writing skills emphasizing the organization, coherence, and cohesion and such sub-skills as summarizing, outlining, and paraphrasing at paragraph level.
ELT 109 – Linguistics
An introduction to the basic concepts in linguistics. Components of language as a system: phonology; morphology; semantics and syntax. Linguistic competence and performance; the arbitrariness of the linguistic sign; linguistic creativity; language universals. The anatomy of the brain and language; brain lateralization and handedness; and language processing. Semantics: componential analysis; semantic relations; collocational meaning; thematic relations. Pragmatics and discourse analysis: speech act theory; the Cooperative Principle; politeness and speech acts; formal aspects of discourse; cohesion; discourse and the context of situation.
TDE 115 – Turkish
The characteristics, rules and basic grammar are given in this course. Practical work is carried to improve the students’ comprehension, writing and speaking skills. At the end of this course, the students will use language effectively and fluently; know Turkish language's pronunciation features; discuss a matter in a speech; apply effective presentation techniques and learn writing rules and punctuation.
EBB 102 – Educational Psychology
Various dimensions of human development (cognitive, social, psychological, moral and physical), approaches to learning and learning process, learning styles, motivation and individual differences in learning. By the end of this course, students will be able to understand basics of educational psychology in terms of its definition, significance and implications in education.
ELT 104 – Listening and Speaking Skills II
This course is a continuation of Listening and Speaking Skills I, and it will focus on basic skills and principles of listening and phonetics. A variety of different authentic listening texts and academic presentations will be utilized to develop students’ receptive listening skills. This course includes such sub-skills of listening as note-taking, predicting, extracting specific and detailed information, guessing meaning from context, and getting the gist. Throughout the course, students will be exposed to aural authentic listening materials such as interviews, movies, songs, lectures, TV shows and news broadcasts. This course also aims to equip student teachers with a strong sensitivity towards different accents of English language being spoken around the world.
ELT 106 – Reading and Writing Skills II
This course is a continuation of Reading and Writing Skills I. This course promotes higher level thinking skills. By processing a variety of different authentic reading texts, students will develop superior-level sub-skills of reading namely, making inferences and deductions, and reading between the lines. Students will relate inferences from the text to real life, and gain insights into the cultural similarities and differences. By means of the awareness gained from the texts, students will analyse, synthesize and evaluate information and therefore, in their compositions, react to readings. Students will also analyse and produce different types of essays that are unified, coherent and organized.
ELT 108 – Language Acquisition
This course presents an overview of the theories of first and second language acquisition and focuses on the developmental stages and sequences of first and target language acquisition. Case studies, comparative analysis of the use of native and target languages in corpus data, recordings and/or transcriptions of real second language classroom interaction will be employed for the analysis of first and second language acquisition; comparison of second language acquisition in children and in adults; identifying developmental sequences in first language acquisition; stages in second language morpho-syntactic development; processes in second language acquisition; learner characteristics and individual variation in ultimate attainment in second language acquisition; differences between second language acquisition and foreign language learning contexts.
ELT 110 – Drama
Improving communicative competence for the theatre and the EFL classroom by developing knowledge of kinesics, semiotics, pragmatics and appropriacy in communication. Improving students’ overall linguistic competence and self-confidence by exemplifying techniques and possibilities of using drama in education for the future EFL educators. Improvisation, interaction, speech activities and individual and group presentations based on selected drama passages.
EBB 209 – Teaching Principles and Methods
This course presents the basic instructional principles and methods in education. It focuses on the principles of learning and teaching, the significance and necessity of being planned and organized in learning. To this end, this course will cover the basic principles of course design as well as basic methods and techniques in learning and teaching. In this course, the students will discover the ways to apply their relevant theoretical knowledge while learning how to utilize their teaching materials effectively. Students will also become conscious of teacher responsibilities and develop strategies to enhance quality in education.
EBB 211 – Turkish Education System and School Administration
This course is designed for prospective teachers to develop the perception and skills related to education systems, Turkish Education System, and school management. It aims to increase understanding of Turkish Education System and other basic concept of education management such as organizational structure, organizational culture, motivation, leadership, decision-making, communication, organizational change, finance, and personnel administration.
ELT 201 – English Literature
This course offers a broad overview of major English works from the Anglo-Saxon period through the 17th century, and introduces the students to the intensive examination of literary texts in various genres with references to the cultural, philosophical, scientific, and ethical context they were written in. It involves discussion of some of the most influential critical schools of thought which shaped the general features of the texts. By the end of the course, the students are expected to perform a reasonable close reading by analysing the literary and figurative elements in poetry, fiction and drama in the relevant literary periods.
ELT 205 – Approaches to English Language Teaching
Basic issues and processes in ELT course design; the difference among approach, method and technique and the significance of these concepts in course design; an overview of important methods and approaches in ELT: Grammar Translation Method, Direct Method, Audio-lingual Method, Silent Way, Community Language Learning, Suggestopedia, Communicative Approach, the Natural Approach.
ELT 209 – Oral Skills
Communication-oriented speaking such as discussions, individual presentations and other interactive tasks; formal and informal language; informative and persuasive presentations; supra-segmental features (pitch, stress and intonation); use of audiovisual aids (OHP, power point, posters) and techniques.
ENF 201 – Introduction to Information Technologies and Applications
This course covers the characteristics of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the place and use of such technologies in instructional process to facilitate and enhance learning of a foreign language.
TRH 115 – Ataturk’s Principles and the History of Turkish Revolution
A history of the foundation of the Turkish Republic in the light of Ataturk`s principles.
BTH 202 – Educational Technology and Materials Design
Characteristics of various instructional technologies, the place and the use of technologies in instructional process, development of teaching materials through instructional technologies (worksheets, transparencies, slides, videotapes, computer-based instructional material, etc.), assessment of various teaching materials.
EBB 206 – Development of Programming
This course is designed to assist students in developing those skills essential for curriculum restructuring, planning, and implementation at the school site. Three essential processes, curriculum development, assessment, and instruction will be considered with respect to relevant theory, research, and practice. Emphasis is placed on the role of responsible leadership in assuring that these processes function effectively. Field experiences designed to provide a clinical setting for the demonstration of theory applied to practice will be an integral part of the course.
ELT 202 – American Literature
This course provides the students with an introduction to selected literary texts. Particular attention is given to American literature but milestone literary texts from literature in English may also be included. Exposure to reading literature in English and discussion around the themes in written and oral forms are assumed to increase the awareness of how English language is used, and expose the students to the practice of integrating literature in English language teaching.
ELT 208 – Methods of Private Teaching
Designing and conducting needs analysis on language learner needs, writing objectives that reflect these needs and designing course syllabus at the macro level and micro level; an overview of different lesson stages and approaches to lesson planning and course design; various syllabus types and criteria for the selection of appropriate syllabus type according to the learner needs, learner age and aims of the course; standards-based teaching, proficiency descriptors, English language proficiency standards and guidelines, Common European Framework and the European Language Portfolio; and identity.
ELT 210 – Scientific Research Methods
Teaching research methods and techniques, encouraging students to prepare small scale research projects in their own field of study, and evaluating them. Basic concepts of research; the structure of scientific research; problem, research model, sampling, data collection (qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques); data analysis and interpretation.
EBB 301 – Guidance
Purposes of student personality services and their place in education, introduction to guidance services in schools, principles of guidance, diagnosing and guiding students, collection and use of data on student counselling, placement, follow-up advising, research and evaluation, relations with parents and beyond the school community, vocational guidance, purposes of special education, identifying students with special learning needs.
EBB 309 – Measurement and Assessment
Types of tests; test preparation techniques for the purpose of measuring various English language skills; the practice of preparing various types of questions; evaluation and analysis techniques; statistical calculations. ELT 303 – English Speaking and Listening-Understanding Teaching
Techniques and stages of teaching listening, speaking, pronunciation and vocabulary; building language awareness and teaching skills for language learners at various ages and language proficiency levels; lesson planning and techniques of the specific skills for a variety proficiency levels.
ELT 305 – Literature and Language Teaching
Short stories and novels from British and American literature and those which are originally produced in English; identification of the distinctive features of short stories and novels; different approaches to using literature with teenage and adult learners at all levels; examining ways in which the teaching of literature and language in these two genres (short story and novel), exploring theoretical and practical dimensions of this integration; analysis of literary texts as content and as context; culture teaching through short stories and novel.
ELT 307 – Second Foreign Language
Depending on the facilities of the department, student teachers may choose to learn one of the following languages to fulfil the second foreign language requirement: German, French, Italian. This course is an introduction to the basics of a second foreign language. It aims at providing student teachers with the skills required for basic communication. Students will also be given some insight into the target culture and lifestyle.
EBB 340 – Classroom Management
This course presents best practices in classroom management - from organizing time, materials, and classroom space to strategies for managing individual and large group student behaviours, transitions, lab activities, and other arrangements for classrooms in general and special education. Basic federal and state laws as they pertain to the legal procedures for all teachers, including teachers of students with disabilities and ESL students, will be presented. This course will prepare the university student to feel confident, know and fulfil their professional and legal responsibilities not only on the first day of school, but for the entire school year.
ELT 302 – Teaching English to Children
The differences between young learners (K-6) and learners at other ages (in terms of learning of language structures, skills and sub-skills), misconceptions about young learners; learner styles (e.g.: visual, auditory, kinesthetic) and strategies (e.g.: meta cognitive, cognitive, socio affective) of young learners; activities (e.g.: puzzles, stories and games, simulations) and audio visual aids (e.g.: pictures, realia, cartoons, puppets, songs) for the teaching of vocabulary, language skills and structures; selecting and sequencing teaching points and adapting and evaluating materials according to the cognitive and affective development and language level of the learners; classroom management techniques necessary for young learner classrooms.
ELT 306 – English Reading and Writing Teaching
Techniques used in and stages of teaching reading, writing and grammar to language learners at various ages and language proficiency levels; building language awareness and teaching skills; integration of the language skills, principles of lesson planning and techniques of the specific skills for a variety of proficiency levels.
ELT 310 – Applied School Experience
Observing a typical day of a teacher and a student, the way the teacher organizes his/her lesson, the stages of a lesson, how the teacher uses teaching methods and techniques, what types of activities the teacher utilizes, how the teacher manages the class, the way the teacher finishes the lesson and his/her method of evaluation of student performance; analysing the organizational structure of a school, how the principal conducts his duty, and the relationship.
OEB 348 – Special Education
Teaching English to students with special needs: overview of the history of special education, definitions, characteristics, theoretical perspectives; classroom management and educational programming in special education.
ELT 401 – Practice Teaching I
Consolidating the skills necessary for teaching English as a foreign language at primary and secondary schools through observation and teaching practice in pre-determined secondary schools under staff supervision; critically analysing the previously acquired teaching related knowledge and skills through further reading, research and in class activities in order to develop a professional view of the ELT field.
ELT 406 – Practice Teaching II
This course is a continuation of ELT 401.
